NEW DELHI, 08TH MAR 2006 PRESS RELEASE HOME MINISTER FLAGS OFF BSF EVEREST EXPEDITION
Sh Shivraj V Patil, Home Minister of India today flagged off BSF Everest Expedition team in a colourful function held at BSF HQ CGO Complex, today.
The BSF took on mountaineering and other adventurous sports quite late in the year 1978 with its first expedition to Mount NUN (7135 Mtrs) in Zanskar Himalayas. The expedition was led by Col P P S Cheema. Two strong climbing parties, consisting of seven and eleven members, scaled the summit of NUN on 25th and 26th Jun 1978 respectively. Later on six members of the summit party made history by skiing down from an altitude of 7000 mtrs. BSF once again returned to the mountains after a gap for eight long years in 1986. Volunteers from various units were put through pre expedition training cum climbing camp at Manali. In 1987, BSF team under the leadership of Shri Chhering Ram, Dy Commandant successfully scaled Mount Kamet (7656 m) And Mt. Abigamin (7355 m). In 2001, under the leadership of Shri N S Satish Chander, Assistant Commandant the team scaled four peaks in Jogin Group i.e. Jogin-I (6465 m), II (6342 m), III (6116 m) and unnamed virgin peak (6079 m). The same year, this team completed 339 kms long trek from Uttarkashi to Joshimath via Kalindini Khal, Valley of flowers and Kagbhusandi Tal in 15 days. In 2002, this young team successfully scaled Mount Kamet (7756 m) and Mount Abigamin (7355 m). As a pre-Everest expedition, the BSF team organized an expedition to Mt Satopanth (23206 m) during 2005 and created history by placing 20 members on the top of Mt Satopanth since the first ascent in 1937.
This is the first BSF expedition to the Mt Everest. The team is attempting through the traditional route i.e. South East Ridge. The team consists of 14 members, which includes 10 climbers, 02 support members and two Medical Officers. The BSF team is being led by Shj S C Negi, ADIG (P) Ftr HQ Jammu, with a track record of having successfully led 10 major BSF expeditions to many challenging peaks in the Himalayas. The expedition to Mt Everest normally takes approx 65 days, which includes the climbing period from Katmandu to the Base camp, further to the summit and back. In all five camps will be established including the Base Camp.
Sh Patil, in his inaugural speech appreciated BSF sincerity in promoting adventure sports and said adventure sports instill courage and sense of discipline. Sh A K Mitra, DG BSF and other senior BSF Officials were present on the occasion.
